IT in Canada...

I am an IT professional in Bangalore on an onsite trip to Ottawa and now working in my client's place.
The very first day I got a desktop...a separate cubicle surrounded by tall cardboards...I wanted to tell the guys that I am not a senior manager nor a BU head ..y did they gimme a separate cubicle ...where 4 people can sit and work. But 'This is Canada' this is they way that everyone s treated.........from the cubicle size or the laptop u cannot make out the difference between a manager and a designer. They believe the difference between a manager and the designer varies with the nature of work...they have different roles n responsibities.

Here in Bangalore the difference between MANAGERs n subordinates is very easy to spot...they sit n independent spacious cubicles....they have laptops... they have different colour tags....so its very easy to spot a manager.

U wudnt believe me if I say there is no attendance...no need to wear our ID cards all thro the campus...u really feel comfortable with the independence that u get here.No dress code...hmmm really guys...they dont say "No dress code" and later send so many mails about strict adherence to the dress code mentioned in the email.

There r no strict mandatory working hours...8 hrs is more than enough to complete the work they allot to us...and there is no software to calculate exactly the no of hrs swiped accurate to 2 decimal places...and there r no persons to question/scold u for not swiping in 9.5hrs daily.

No effort sheets ...no colour colour data.....no pie chart...no bar graph.....everything is the manager's work...I neednt fill anything....I get lots of time to fix my bug.

A big TV in front of my lab...wow....and people collect in huge numbers when there is a Ice Hockey match and they all go in chorus......Oooooooooooooo...uouououuuuuo..ooo.Its like a mini stadium when their team s n the semi's or finals.Employees r permitted to bring their kids to office...separate seats in canteen for kids...:-)

Even if my manager wants to talk with me an appointment is required....they dont come and stand next to me and peep into my monitors.

Most important ...no language problems here...everyone speaks in English.....no need of knowing hindi kannada telugu malayalam to get the work done......no need of developing personal rapport to get things done.In Bangalore my manager constantly insists us to get things done using personal rapport or by using the local language of the doer.

In India u leave by 6pm and u can see so many people asking u .."y so early today'...'y so early'...and u really need to give them a big reason to convince them....but here people say..'I m so late to start and u look at ur watch n u c its just 4pm.....my kid may feel bad if I go late.....n they vanish n a second"

Automated doors for physically challenged guys.

Travel time is 5-10 mins..imagine the travel from Electronics city to my house ....oh my God..I get all my tensions with the noise and dust and dirt and minimum 3 hrs and when it rains its almost a day gone in travel.Getting a seat in the bus is another art in our company bus...u have to cum 30 mins earlier and catch a seat...but here its always a window seat for me...buses are frequent and they are empty most of the times.

Mmmmmmmmm...being an IT professional in Canada is gr8..:-)

Ramc...gud thinking...y pizza..y cafe's...y fud world..????
I dont wish to change anything all of a sudden....but I want people to b aware of work culture in other places in the world.
How many of us stay simply to attend a call late nite w/o knowing there is an option in tedweb to connect ur mobile nos to the telecon bridge. If everyone in team says they cannot attend meeting from 9pm -11pm simply bcoz its a Friday nite n they want to go home early then ur manager will arrange a bridge for u n tedweb...:-)

i agree to all of your points...but woes india blame it on the population we have here...

Its not only bcoz of population..its all the difference between a developing country and a developed country.

Day to day life s so easy n a developed country.

As Rakesh has mentioned in India there r companies like sasken which provide a gud work culture.
